BEST SEX SCENES EVER
The 9 Best TV Sex Scenes of 2019
There was a lot of sex on TV in 2019, but only a handful of it was good enough to make you hit the 10-second rewind button over and over again. Here, a roundup of the best of the best. (And if you're wondering why Jon and Daenerys are missing, it's because he's her nephew.)
1. Claire and Jamie,Outlander
Season two ofOutlanderwas somewhat lacking in the sex scene department, and given Jamie and Claire's separation in the finale (and what book readers knew would be coming), cautious hope was the only way to approach season three. It tookOutlandersix episodes to reunite this time-crossed pair, but "A. Malcolm" made it extremely worth the wait. The lead-up was just wonderful — Claire dyeing her hair in episode five, Jamie fainting upon seeing her, Jamie examining photos of their daughter with his cute little spectacles — as was the accurate depiction of their awkwardness together after being apart for 20 years. A fully clothed Jamie saying "I would very much like to kiss you" was so hot it could honestly count as its own sex scene, but that would be unfair to the other contenders that aren't fortunate enough to have smoldering Scots in their casts. And the actual sex? It goes on for a full 20 minutes or so (pauses for conversation included).
2. Jane and Fabian,Jane the Virgin
As devastating as Michael's (Brett Dier) death was, it's been fun watching a post-grief Jane (Gina Rodriguez) navigate single life as a woman who's no longer against casual sex. Though things ultimately didn't work out with Fabian (Francisco San Martin), their first love scene together was a delight. It included up against the wall kissing, kitchen counter groping, and most importantly, floor sex that caused Jane to push a bunch of books off a table. You know it's passionate when Jane stops caring about the fate of the printed word.
3. Luke and Claire,The Defenders
Sorry, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones shippers, but Luke Cage and Claire Temple had one of the best sex scenes of all time. In the first episode ofThe Defenders, Luke (Mike Colter) and Claire (Rosario Dawson) destroy a kitchen table with their passion without even getting fully undressed. Their post-coital flirtation is perfect, too; sitting among the wreckage, Claire tells Luke he has "potential."
4. Offred and Nick,The Handmaid's Tale
Even the sex scenes thataren'tabout forced childbearing are unpleasant onThe Handmaid's Tale, where life is bleak pretty much all the time. After Offred (Elisabeth) has sex with Nick (Max Minghella) at the behest of Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski), who thinks her husband is sterile, Offred returns to Nick's room of her own free will and enjoys the first consensual, pleasurable sex she's had since before Gilead came into being. The circumstances are far from ideal, but the toe curling and swelling orchestral music indicates that all involved parties are having a great time — especially once Offred gets on top.
5. Renata and Gordon,Big Little Lies
For all their money, power, and gorgeous real estate, even theBig Little Liescharacters who aren't in abusive relationships are pretty unhappy, especially Renata (Laura Dern), whose exclusion from the group only deepens after her daughter starts getting bullied at school. Between all that drama and their stressful careers, she and her husband Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling) are struggling to find time for each other, so one day they decide to what you'd also do if you had a private bathroom in your office — have sex during work hours. This isn't middle-aged, boring married people sex, either. They shake the wall, knock stuff off the counter, and make so much noise that everyone in the vicinity can hear them through two sets of doors. To be fair, Renatadidwarn Gordon that she'd be loud: "Well, they'll hear. You know how I get."
6. Kat and Adena,The Bold Type
Throughout season one ofThe Bold Type, Kat (Aisha Dee) regularly had the most interesting plot lines, and she also had the most interesting romance. After meeting Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) for a work project, Kat gradually discovered that (1) she liked women and (2) she and Adena had great chemistry. When they finally consummated their attraction in "Before Tequila Sunrise," it was deliberately slow, sweet, and so romantic that it achieved the impossible feat of making getting stuck in an airport look fun.
7. Issa and Eddie,Insecure
AsInsecuresex scenes go, Issa's tryst with her neighbor was far from the hottest one the show's ever done, but it was definitely one of the most relatable. After deciding she wants to have no-strings sex, Issa (Issa Rae) comes up with the lamest excuse ever — an extra phone charger — to stop by Eddie's (Leon Thomas III) apartment in an obvious attempt to initiate a hookup. They watch a littleGossip Girland smoke a little weed, then encounter every sex roadblock imaginable. They smack heads, Eddie can't get Issa's jeans unbuttoned, and Issa has to "respectfully decline" his offer of titty fucking, but they eventually get it together enough for Issa to have satisfied her desire for casual sex. Mission accomplished!
8. Abby and Vincent,The Deuce
As a show that's literally about sex work,The Deuceis full of sex scenes, but most of them are so dark that they're not likely to turn you on. The one exception is the sex scene between Vincent (James Franco) and Abby (Margarita Levieva) in "I See Money." While hooking up with your boss is never a great idea, this scene is a great illustration of why it remains such a popular fantasy. Another important fantasy element here? The pool table, on which Vincent hoists Abby with the line, "May I make one small suggestion?" Make all the suggestions you want to, Vin!
9. Salim and Ifrit,American Gods
This scene was groundbreaking for several reasons — it was explicit sex between two men, both of whom are Muslim — but it was also just plain hot. That word applies both literally and figuratively here, because the Ifrit — a supernatural being born from fire — ejaculates flames when he comes. And here you thought playing with candle wax was fun.
