Behold the very first photos of the 2019 Blazer in the wild (on the road).

The model photographed here is the range-topping Premier trim level that’s positioned above all other trim levels. The vehicle is coated in white and looks like a champ undergoing final shakedown testing on the street of metro Detroit.

The front end is defined by a large, “open maw”-style grille (we’re sure some states will ruin it with a front license plate). The squinty headlamps, which are not really headlamps at all, but are rather the daytime driving lights, are done in just the right way: rather than looking cartoonish (looking at the pre-facelift Jeep Cherokee), they look menacing and poignant. The real headlamps, located in the cluster below the squinty DRLs, work very well with quite the aggressive design that is both unique and emotional.

The fact that the 2019 Blazer is not trying to imitate any other crossover is obvious from the side profile. Yes, that front overhang is long – but not any longer than on any other transverse-engined, front-drive-based CUV. In fact, the design and placement of the headlight cluster, along with the surface detailing of the front bumper cover minimizes the overhang’s proportions.

The blacked-out A-pillar and sweeping belt-line treatment make it seem that the new Blazer has a floating roof panel. And check out the pronounced surface detailing on the bottom end of the doors. You ain’t gonna get that on a Highlander or Pilot. And those large, bright 21-inch wheels eat up nearly all the available space in the round wheel-wells.

And then there’s the rear end. The roof-mounted spoiler looks in place, rather than an afterthought – as is the case with many modern crossovers. The taillights are totally representative of Chevrolet’s modern design language, the integrated dual exhaust outlets look the part, and even the surface detailing on the liftgate (check out those downward sloping lines originating to the left and right of the Chevy logo) is very attractive.

Having seen Chevy’s new midsize crossover in person and in pictures, we think it’s safe to say that it has a significant amount of road presence, which doesn’t necessarily come across in the press photos or the studio shots that we took during the last month. Sure, the new Blazer is not an off-road-capable body-on-frame SUV that some really wanted it to be. But in a sea of bland crossovers, the Blazer is its own animal, and we have yet to see an angle on it that we didn’t like. In fact, we’re starting to appreciate its intricately bold and unreserved design.
