I completely missed the fact that I never have any firm plans for decoration my Christmas table. I seem to have just taken a ‘throw whatever I can get hold of on the day on the table’ approach without even meaning to. And for the planner in me this is a shocking oversight.

So when HomeSense challenged me to decorate my Christmas table with items from their store, I happily jumped at the chance.

My friend SJ and I rocked up at the store with a plan to be in and out in 30 mins. Two hours and three full turns round the shop later, found me sat on the floor forcing myself to decide what I was going to buy and what I had to put back for later. Turquoise candles, marzipan and enamel milk pan – I am looking at you. HomeSense has some seriously awesome and eclectic stuff at affordable prices and is a great place to stock up on Christmas goodies.

SJ was so impressed she even came up with this little ditty for Home Sense.

Christmas is a time to party,
not be dull and quiet.
So feast with friends and family
and have a colour riot.

Back home, I came up with lots of affordable ideas for how to incorporate your normal Christmas items into a ‘riot of colour’ table setting. And being the nice soul that I am, I will share these tips with you.

1) Start with a neutral base and add in splashes of colour.
2) Don’t just stick with traditional colours. Love turquoise, fuchsia or burnt orange, then create a colour pop table using these.
3) Baubles are for more than decorating the Christmas tree. Use them to create a stunning table centrepiece.
4) Repurpose strips of leftover wrapping paper as table runners for an instant colour boost.
5) Don’t hide desserts away for later. Show them off as secondary centrepieces whilst tempting guests with all those treats to come.
6. Ribbons around crockery and cutlery are an elegant, welcoming and colourful touch for guests.
