Welcome to our sweet beatnik pad, daddy-o! Kick back with coffee wine or a good book to cozy sounds of jazz & typewriters. The historic Grand Midway Hotel -long a hub for traveling artists, musicians, poets, & filmmakers- is a seminal bohemian destination spot in the USA. See the hometown of famed Rock & Roll DJ Alan Freed! Leap into Jack Kerouac's On The Road, Ginsberg's HOWL, Burroughs' Naked Lunch! Stay the night where epic cultural figures stayed. Plus, you never know who'll be visiting...
There is mini walking tour through the historic old building. Guests are allowed to snoop round a bit. The place is a wild mix like nothing in the area for 200 miles. It is practically a breathing art gallery. So we provide a mini-tour through the various themed rooms with all the history of the area, from famed artist retreat in the 1800s, to coal mining community in the 1900s, and of course now to all the famed ghost stories that swirl through our halls. The Grand Midway was featured on the national Syfy show The Haunted Collector. Several novels and a feature film have been set here. It is also home to two Guinness World Records, the World's Largest Tarot Card and the World's Largest Ouija Board.
Windber is a small walking community that sometimes seems like you are stepping back right into 1950. There are several little bars and restaurants and the beautiful Arcadia Theater all within a block of walking. Just outside our front doors is a park where you can see the Alan Freed walk-of-fame sidewalk star and state historic sign. Freed was the famed DJ who coined the term Rock and Roll and also hosted the first rock concert. He's been celebrated the world over, including holding a practical shrine in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. And he was born right here in Windber, PA!
Blair was instantly reachable to answer any questions we had with the property. If you have a curious and artistic spirit, this is the place for you! It’s more like a home museum with decor that catches your eye at every corner! My advice to you is to research this home before you go - the history is more than I was aware of, and that always makes for a great time! Johnstown itself is quite the same - quaint and full of history. I highly recommend this inn for an adventure!Donna2018-05-12T00:00:00Z
I've stayed in many Airbnb's around the world, and this one is my favorite so far! The Grand Midway Hotel is the coolest, kookiest place on Earth. My room was perfect, cozy, and full of interesting stuff. Location-wise, it could not be better—you are in the middle of the neatest, funkiest small town in western Pennsylvania, steps from cool bars and shops, and within very close driving distance (5 min.) to state and national parks, forests, and hiking. Blair was a really friendly and gracious host who really went above and beyond. He was easy to contact, very responsive, and even called to make a reservation for me at a super cool restaurant (Rizzo's) a short walk from the hotel. I would definitely stay here again. Blair is an awesome host!Patrick Scott2018-01-15T00:00:00Z

Hands-down the most interesting Airbnb experience we have ever had. Almost like a museum, so much cool stuff and we had an amazing time.Brian2018-08-16T00:00:00Z

If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, this is it. As much an art installation as a BnB, the Grand Midway has the feel of my favorite parts of New Orleans plopped down conveniently in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, I didn't have any ghostly encounters, but we did get to meet a thoroughly wonderful host. This ain't your grandma's B&B experience!Katherine2018-04-06T00:00:00Z
