JDP Student Spotlight
Skylar Henry, daughter of Christopher and Stephanie Henry and sister of Gabrielle Henry, is a student at HHS who is living her dream as a photojournalist. Undeniably familiar with the small-town atmosphere, it was the wide-open field and lush wildlife that inspired her to buy her first camera at the young age of 14. One year and several mowed lawns later, she took a leap of faith, making the largest purchase of her life at such a young age. As Skylar stated, "I was so awe inspired and entranced by the world around me, I knew in my heart I could not let any opportunity pass me by to not share that beauty. In my quest to convey my own unique perspective through the lens of my camera, I was hired as a stringer for the Jennings Daily News. Again, I was 14."
Now a Daily News Staff writer and photographer, Skylar primarily covers sports and wildlife, but she loves to step out of her comfort zone to do much, much more. This adventure has garnered her recognition from the JDP Fair to attending National 4-H Congress in Atlanta (Louisiana 4-H Photography Contest Winner) to interning at the Galveston Daily News to even meeting many important journalism figures in Detroit! Her work has been featured on multiple media outlets, including the LSU Get it Growing calendar, the Wildlife and Fisheries web page, and the Jennings Daily News Supplemental Magazine.
"When I am not behind a camera, you can find me on the courts playing tennis, at the movies with my family, or planning/attending volunteer programs throughout Jeff Davis Parish. I owe my success to my family, the staff of HHS, Jennings Daily News, Jeff Davis Parish School Board, and the community members who have supported me day in and day out. My name is Skylar Henry, and I do more than press a button."
